Down The Rabbit Hole Collective

Identified as performers of contemporary music, Down the Rabbit Hole naturally searches for extended techniques: we are wild curators of our concert programmation and indulge into setting up a superb performance space. As a music collective, we love to challenge and support fascinating creative artists to follow their ideas.

‘Happy new ears!’ Cage said. In this session we invite you to welcome the challenge, embrace the experience and don’t expect anything more than this. It’s all about (deep) listening. It’s all about (active) silence. It’s all about (vibrating) sound.

A live performance is a dialogue between performer and audience, where a large number of parameters are at play to condition this communication. This workshop will look at different ways of how the performer can give shape to his/her presence on stage. How does our listening influence the way we position ourselves? How can breathing affect our mental, physical and emotional state and can it be used to as a communication tool?

Benjamin Glorieux

Talking about the experiences received in education, in contrast (or not?) with a career.

To what extent did one shape the other?

Can a career be planned?

Is it a matter of luck? Hard work? Connections? Looking good? Education?

Finally, what does it mean to be a performing and/or creating artist?

Are there any pitfalls?

A concert is never just a neutral container for music. On the contrary, the context of a musical production, forms of audience involvement and display, programme texts, etc. are all elements that affect performance and listening in remarkable ways.

Aware of this, many composers and performers today think of these elements as part of their artistic practice, exploring them to engage new audiences and propose new musical experiences.

Heike Langsdorf

The Dance Of The Day is a score for groups to collectively make and execute an accumulative choreography. The situations occurring enhance how one contributes to ‘something’—to a possible structure or organisation—that is not yet a given. It makes tangible how we are always already regulating a scene that is yet unruled. This practice explores the performative, or reality-producing, capacity of movement.

Seminars

Intro to Systemic Design

by Saskia Westerduin

How do I curate my artistic career in a Systemic Design Thinking mindset?

Design Thinking revolves around a profound interest in the understanding of the people for whom we are creating and performing. The methodology not only helps us reflect on our own goals, dreams & skills, but also facilitates the observation and understanding of our target publics and guides us in the process of questioning our challenges, in the search for solutions and in the assessment of the impact.

Sustainable Futures

by Ellen Loots & Dimitrios Marinos

Trying to grasp the fundamentals of Sustainability we will explore it under the scope of the organisational level in order to be able to bring it down and apply it to team / ensemble level as long as individual level, in our professional as well as personal life.

By creating a shared road map for sustainability and green strategies we could achieve a huge betterment and enhancement of our endeavours towards the achievement of sustainable organisations in the near future.

What is a theory of change? Ellen Loots will explain it, and present it as a tool that can be used to develop insight in how activities, their required inputs and realized outputs together can lead to an impact. In an open discussion, we will explore how higher music education can contribute to the sustainable development goals.

Musician or diplomate?

by Lieselot Le Comte

How music and musicians are used as soft power in political diplomacy.

How would you feel if you music was used as a political tool? How will you remain in charge of your own message? And what about pragmatic considerations, since often political programmes offer a lot of opportunities for musicians?

Design Thinking

by Saskia Westerduin

How to review the System

Nowadays, the contemporary musician, in addition to being a specialist instrumentalist, needs to master skills regarding curatorial strategies, media insights, effectual marketing and sustainable economics. How can higher music education anticipate this urgent need for more and more specialized skills and expertise?

Learning from the future as it emerges

by Anna Ranczakowska

This workshop will provoke a discussion towards fostering a mindset that allows students to tune in the professional ecosystem they work within every day. By using generative listening as a tool, they scan that environment trying to understand what is happening in the world around us and, more importantly, what is about to happen.

Music Curatorship

by Brandon Farnsworth

At least three sins of curating music (there’s probably more): An Introduction to the field.

It will consist of a history of the term ‘curating’ as it emerged in the visual arts world and how it has been adopted by the field of experimental music. The seminar will conclude with a discussion of three of the ‘sins’ of curating music, each one addressing a different area of debate or controversy around how the term is being used in music today.

A Value Based Approach

by Arjo Klamer

Exploring your entrepreneurial possibilities, by focusing on the values and purposes of your professional life. This session will help you to figure out what is really important for you as a professional and, to discuss what is needed to realize your purpose (based on his recently published book Sense of Purpose).

From crowdfunding to crowd engagement

by Lisanne Brouwer

In introduction to the principles of reward-based crowdfunding. With crowdfunding, amazing projects are realized by small donations from the audience (network or crowd) of the musician, small collective or even large orchestra who is running the campaign. The backer gets a special reward, such as an album or a living room concert, in return. The donation is a means to start or strengthen the relationship between the artist or orchestra and their audience.

Hackaton

by Saskia Westerduin

How to curate my/our career in a global context

Can we (students & alumni) use our skills, our artistic expertise and the universal language of music to tackle some of those challenges? Do we have a responsibility to address them? Where lie our boundaries as a human being and as a classically trained musician? Which challenges can be opportunities for our artistic careers?

Meaning to Music, Social Activism

by Marlies De Munck

In this round table session we will discuss the meaning of music in contemporary society. The aim is to develop a critical-philosophical reflection on how music functions and on how (implicit) conceptions of music have evolved lately in relation to societal and techonological changes.

Psychology and Motivation

by Pawan Bhansing & Daniela Coimbra

Linking Identity to Outcomes.

In this seminar Pawan Bhansing and Daniela da Costa Coimbra are combining their views on identity, motivation, personality, and career goals. The seminar will explore perceptions and paths in which the previously mentioned concepts may be combined, by using an exemplary ‘design thinker’ and your personal goals.

Balancing in artistic entrepreneurship

by Frans Brouwer

How did a famous musician get off the beaten track and how can we do this nowadays, sticking to our own identity and creativity as well as becoming successful? By telling stories and showing videos Frans will clear up misunderstandings on (artistic) entrepreneurship and give creative examples of how arts can meet business. That way he tries to inspire the participants, brainstorming in small groups, to find their own entrepreneurial ideas for their future as a musician in the world of performing arts. Themes coming along are composing, performing, instrument making, programming, social engineering, leadership, emotion versus reason, creating qualitative and quantitative success.
